November Student Branch Meeting

Thank you to everyone that was able to make it from the Student Branch, and Dr. Atabaki's MECH 473 class for being a great audience. This meeting featured Mihaela Spulber for a presentation on VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) Technology. Mihaela's presentation shed light on some of the energy saving benefits that this technology can offer. I have sent the PowerPoint file to all the members of the student branch, and if anyone else would like to review the slides I would be happy to forward you the presentation.

There will be no December meeting due to final exams, but if anyone would be interested in arranging a tour or informal meeting I would likely be able to make it happen. Good luck on exams, and Happy Holidays.

Regards,
Jayson

October BC ASHRAE Chapter Meeting

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone from the Student Branch that attended the BC ASHRAE meeting last week. Our turnout was so good that some people were confused as to whether or not it was Student Night!

The BC Chapter meetings are a great networking experience and can provide insight into practices used in industry. Dennis Knight's presentation on BIM (Building Information Modelling) demonstrated many of the uses and advantages of an integrated design system.

I will continue to keep student branch members up to speed with the scheduling of UBC Student Branch and BC Chapter meetings, and look forward to seeing everyone again at the November Student Branch meeting.

October Student Branch Meeting

Hi Everyone,

I would like to thank everyone that came out to our first UBC ASHRAE Student Branch meeting of the new school year. The meeting featured Chris Collett, the current President of the BC ASHRAE Chapter, for a presentation on IAQ. Chris's presentation was very interesting and shed light on common problems and troubleshooting strategies in managing IAQ.

The next BC Chapter meeting is on Thursday, October 13th at the Italian Cultural Center. You can find the meeting itinerary at the following link: http://ashrae.bc.ca/bc/meetings/2011/ASHRAE_Oct_2011_%20Meeting_Notice.pdf . The cost for students is $10, and it is well worth it. If you are interested in carpooling or going as a group, you can contact me at ubcashrae@gmail.com.

I will be in touch with current members over the next few weeks as I arrange a site visit and November meeting. If you are reading this and are interested in joining the student branch, you can reach me at the email above.

International Student Energy Summit

This June, UBC is going to be hosting the International Student Energy Summit. It's a 3 day forum for students to discuss the sustainable energy future. If you're going to be in Vancouver during that time, I highly suggest you look into this amazing opportunity. The event has a history of outstanding speakers, such as Jeremy Rifkin (leading American economist and author of the Hydrogen Economy) as well as Vicente Fox (former President of Mexico). This year' speaker will be Dr. Rajendra Pachauri (Nobel Peace Prize winner and Chair of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change- IPCC). More details can be found at the ISES website - http://www.studentenergy.org/

Hillcrest Tour

Hi Everyone,

A while back we were fortunate enough to go on a tour of the Hillcrest facility in Vancouver. It was quite amazing how much has changed since one year ago when it was the Olympic curling venue. The new facility is going to be a major hub for community events. It will have a state of the art aquatics centre (which is currently operational), two ice sheets, a soccer pitch, and even a branch of the Vancouver Public Library.

I should definitely say thank you to Ian Harvey at the City of Vancouver for taking us behind the scenes to show us how the whole centre operates. He showed us all of the mechanical systems and equipment that keep the facility running. I've posted a slideshow with some of the pictures from the tour, hopefully it gives a good idea of the kind of stuff we got to see.

ASHRAE Updates

Hey Guys,

It's been a while since my last post so here goes. Firstly, the tour of the Hillcrest Curling Facility will take place tomorrow. It should be pretty interesting since this was the venue for the Olympic Curling that took place almost exactly one year ago (and Canada even won gold medals there too!). Stay tuned for pictures and a recap of what we get to see.

Secondly, there is a sustainability workshop tomorrow on the design of the new Student Union Building (SUB) at UBC. Check out the following link for more details.

That's all for now,

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone, I just wanted to let you know of a few upcoming events.

First, there will be an ASHRAE BC meeting happening on January 12. This one will be a lunch meeting, and the presenter will be former ASHRAE Society President Kent Peterson. If you can make it during the day, I really encourage you to go since it should be one of the more interesting ASHRAE events this year. Also, this is a great opportunity for networking with engineers working in industry. Complete event details, including registration info, can be found at http://ashrae.bc.ca/bc/meetings/2010/ASHRAE_January_2011_Meeting_Notice.pdf

Secondly, the UBC Emerging Green Builders (EGB) will be presenting a lecture featuring Pulse Energy, a Vancouver based energy management company. There will also be a presentation on real time energy intelligence for building operation by some SFU Masters students. This event will be on January 10 at 4pm in the CK Choi Building. More info can be found on the EGB website http://tinyurl.com/ubcegb/

Lastly, stay tuned for info regarding a tour of the Hillcrest Curling Facility. I'm still working on the details but should have them finalized soon.
